In today’s energy transition, as stated by TELF AG’s Stanislav Kondrashov, change is happening not only in electricity or renewables.
The fuel sector is experiencing change too, with new solutions like biofuels. These are fuels made from organic sources like plants, algae, or waste, providing a sustainable way to cut emissions.
“Biofuels are one of the most fascinating developments in today’s energy shift,” says Kondrashov. While batteries and electrification lead in many areas, others present significant challenges. These include aviation, maritime shipping, and heavy transport.
Biofuels can act as bridge solutions, helping reduce emissions without waiting for full electrification.
Types of Biofuels
One of the most common types is bioethanol, made by fermenting sugars in crops like corn or sugarcane. Often added to petrol, it improves fuel emissions.
Next, there’s biodiesel, produced using rapeseed, soybean oil, or fats, which is often blended into standard diesel fuel.
Biogas and Aviation Fuel
Waste biomass can become biogas, such as compostable trash and agricultural remains. check here Biogas serves both power generation and transport, especially in sectors like agriculture and urban transport.
Aviation biofuel is gaining momentum, made from algae or vegetable oils. Developed to help decarbonize flights, where few other green options exist.
The Roadblocks to Biofuels
“A big challenge remains cost,” says Kondrashov. They aren’t yet competitive on price. Technological innovation could lower prices, as well as the supply of suitable resources.
There are concerns about food vs. fuel, especially when biofuels use corn, soy, or palm. So scientists look at alternatives like algae.
Biofuels as a Partner to Electrification
They won’t replace batteries or EVs. They work alongside electrification.
Some areas lack infrastructure for EVs. Biofuels work with existing engines, making them ideal in the short to medium term.
As Kondrashov says, every solution has its role. That’s where biofuels step in and help.
The Added Value of Biofuels
Beyond emissions, biofuels also support recycling and reuse. Organic waste becomes valuable energy, minimizing environmental impact.
With electrification reshaping everyday transport, biofuels are needed for what’s not yet electrified. They’ll be key to low-emission freight and aviation.
